Figure to Ground
sound works

Since 1997 Graydon has produced works of musique concrete under the name Figure To Ground. These works are based on original field recordings and are primarily concerned with exploring boundary states of listening. Figure To Ground focuses on the acoustic and psychological movement back and forth between sound as environment - as photographic, as a means of self-orientation and perception of space - and sound as musical, with rhythmic repetitions, tonal patterns and a deep pre-rational link to emotional states.
The goal is to continually draw one pole of listening out from the other, moving the listener through an evolving sound world where terms are established, repeated to form motifs, altered and recombined to create new worlds again. In creating these works Figure To Ground hopes to activate in its listeners a heightened sense of agency and creativity in the act of listening to even the most mundane environment; a sense that the world is alive.
