 Scaffold (526 West 26th Street #310)
 environmental video installation
A Fold in the Fabric, LMAKprojects gallery, NYC
 November 16 - December 16, 2006

Scaffold is a work for video projection consisting of thin lines of white light that trace lines of the interior architecture in a portion of the exhibition space. The work seeks to activate the exhibition space and create a slowly evolving sculpture of visual perception out of the existing environment.

A video projector must first be set in the space, aimed high on a wall and portion of the ceiling, including elements of the building's infrastructure such as doorways, ceiling beams, and pipes (NOT at a screen or other traditional surface). Using drawing and live mixing programs on a laptop connected directly to the projector, lines are traced at the seams between connecting planes (where ceiling meets wall, for example). Individual lines are then animated slowly over the projection surface, remaining aligned to the architecture, but extending and stretching its dimensions and creating alternative geometries of the space.

The slices of light create interactions of spill and shadow along the walls that invite a new attention to details of the room's surfaces, as well as a deepening awareness of the perceptual dimensions of the space, of place and of presence. The work is meant to evoke both post-minimalist concepts of pure structure and principles of organization, as well as more poetic associations with astronomy and navigation by the constellations. The piece is unique in that it must be created for the room, in the room, using a projector already set in the space.
