Created for the New Museum’s inaugural Bowery exhbition “Unmonumental”, Untitled (weathering steel) was created from field recordings taken at the Storm King Art Center in New York. Recordings were taken from the perspectives of permanent outdoor sculptures situated there, including works by Maya Lin, Andy Goldsworthy and Richard Serra. The piece engages with minimalist form and its relation to time, and temporal perception. Sound is used as a sculptural material, creating a mobile-like structure in which “solid” forms of sound, made through processes of reduction and extension of the sound’s shapes, are made active through “twists” or processes of movement through time.
